This is one of the most famous female portraits from antiquity: a fashionable young girl caught in a contemplative moment just before applying her pen to the paper.

There are no clues that allow us to identify this girl as Sappho, the Greek poetess: no specific traits, no defining characteristics; rather, she represents a classic type seen in many other Pompeian frescoes. Her curls and golden hair net, earrings and ring show her as the refined image of culture and affluence.
