a question from Maggie

We sure did have kings!  This is Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia,  the first king of Italy; and this is Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, king of the Italian TV shows!

The first king was crowned in 1860, when Italy was unified under a single government, and his descendents ruled until 1948, when the king and his retinue were exiled to Portugal.

In 2002, the Italian Parliament voted to readmit the royal family onto Italian soil, but only as normal citizens, so the crown prince had to find a new way to win the approval of his subjects.  First, he appeared on Dancing with the Stars, and he won by popular vote.  Then, he sang a patriotic song at the big Italian music festival in Sanremo, and he placed second.  And finally, he hosted a new hit TV show, perfect for our society, called i Raccomandati.

Smart, handsome, rich, and aristocratic: a real prince charming!  Too bad he’s already married!
