a question from John

Why are there so many paintings of the Madonna?

As you know Italy is mainly a catholic Country, and Catholics believe in cult of the Virgin Mary.
Mary is the mother of Christ and the Queen of Heaven, that is why she is represented in so many works of art. She is often depicted sitting on a throne, in a blue robe and with a crown or a halo on her head.
Wealthy patrons, who paid for the paintings were probably very devoted to the Madonna, not the singer!

In Italy many churches and cities are dedicated to Mary, for example: Mount Berico in Vicenza, or the cathedral in Florence, or the Frari church in Venice
One more thing, John, Have you ever thought about the expression mamma mia? Where do you think that comes from? Not from a Swedish pop group!
