The Bilingual WebZine of ART and CULTURE – Il Webzine dell'ARTE e della CULTURA

I have spent time in Europe before, but not Italy. Before arriving, I assumed it would be similar to other European countries I have visited (i.e., Germany, England, France, and Switzerland). However, it is quite different.

My first three weeks in Italy have been interesting. So far I have visited several vineyards, attended VinItaly, gone to the beach, spent a day hiking around waterfalls, and have enjoyed many wonderful meals. There are many ways to relax, and Italians appear to have relaxing down to a science.

I haven’t really experienced culture shock in Italy. I recognize that different places have different customs and they persist for a reason. However, there is one thing that I can’t understand about Italians—the way they drive.

If you watch Italians as they move about their day, they never appear to be in a hurry. Walking, shopping, or working, they seem to be happy with a slow pace of life. But, when you enter onto the roads, things change completely. Despite high fuel prices, and expensive insurance rates, Italians all become racecar drivers behind the steering wheel. I am sure there is an explanation for this phenomenon, and perhaps I will discover it during my stay here. Until that happens, I will just pretend that every Italian I see driving fast has a dream of being the next Enzo Ferrari.
