The Bilingual WebZine of ART and CULTURE – Il Webzine dell'ARTE e della CULTURA

What I notice most about both cultures is how people interact with each other. Both cultures are big on family and food, but in different ways. In Italy, portions are smaller, but they fill you up just the same. In an American meal, you eat a lot more. But Italians almost never eat alone. I have no problem eating by myself, but in Italy, everyone was staring at me for doing something so strange, even though to me it seemed normal. Family is another big thing: in the States: families get together for dinner, but there were nights when my parents had to work overtime, and were not at home. In Italy, families always eat dinner together, and talk about their day.

Another thing about Italy is that most of the people dress very well compared to Americans. They follow “fashion with a passion.” Men always wear button shirts, dress shoes, and a nice pair of slacks. When I went wandering around in jeans and a t-shirt, I got lots of funny looks.

In Italy, people are much friendlier than in the States. I remember talking to a young lady here, and she had a really happy personality, very open. If I had tried the same thing in the States, she would probably have given me the cold shoulder. So these are just some of the ways Italian and American cultures are different.
